What is LUFS? **LUFS** stands for **Loudness Units relative to Full Scale** (also termed LKFS in broadcast standards). Unlike peak meters that merely measure the highest electrical sample voltage, LUFS incorporates the **K-weighting acoustic curve**—a filter modeled after human ear sensitivity which is far more attuned to 2 kHz – 4 kHz speech bands than sub-bass frequencies.
Integrated vs. Short-Term vs. Momentary - **Integrated LUFS**: The average perceived loudness of the entire track or podcast from start to finish. - **Short-Term LUFS**: Loudness calculated over a 3-second sliding window. - **Momentary LUFS**: Instantaneous loudness calculated over 400 milliseconds.

Why Exceeding -14 LUFS Hurts Your Music Many novice producers believe "louder is better" and slam their master bus limiter to -8 LUFS. When uploaded to Spotify or YouTube, the normalization engine detects the track is 6 dB louder than reference and **automatically attenuates the volume down by 6 dB**.
